No matter how trying things may be, we need to remember that we are the healthy ones. I would like to illustrate this with a small story. Having five or six sleep interruptions every night for almost a year, running my own consulting business from the house, having to take international trips, earning the money to support this thing called life, I got run down — sometimes getting irritated without meaning to be that way. One morning, during breakfast, Ingrid asked me to do a small repair. I gave an irritated reply, to which she responded very kindly, “Honey, just put yourself for five minutes into this body of mine, and you won’t feel that way anymore.” I felt so ashamed. Not knowing my limits, I had run myself down and would advise all caregivers: “Know when you need to take a break and transfer responsibility to someone else, be it for an hour or a day. You need to take a break yourself!”

Another piece of advice: as you know from Ingrid’s story by now, get a second opinion on everything. I asked the right questions and got the wrong answers; a second opinion might have provided the right answers.

In retrospect, I would also call in Hospice. Ingrid was visited every evening by a nurse, who took her vital signs and blood samples, hooked up the daily IV, etc. I now know that Hospice would have provided more pain medication. But Ingrid was such an eternal optimist — and so was I. We believed we were going to prove to the world that there were still miracles to be performed. A week before her death she said to a friend, “Don’t think for one moment that I am giving up.” I always feared that I would damage that optimism — essentially “sentence her” — if I called in Hospice. Knowing what I know now, I would handle this aspect differently.

Ingrid very clearly expressed her desires about what should happen if she passed on before me. She wanted to be cremated within a day, with no funeral and no wake, but rather, an uplifting memorial service at our church. She wanted her ashes to be scattered near our favorite summer walking place — a jetty by the ocean. I only once asked her to consider that maybe I would like a place to go visit her. Her answer was simple: “Bury me in your heart and you can visit me anywhere you are in this world”. I followed her wishes and am glad I did.

Permafrost in the seabed has been previously assumed to act as an effective cap for the enormous amount of methane in the area.

But researchers at the Russian Academy of Sciences, the University of Alaska and Stockholm University have found that eight million tonnes of methane are currently leaking into the atmosphere every year.

“The amount of methane currently coming out of the East Siberian Arctic Shelf is comparable to the amount coming out of the entire world’s oceans,” said Shakhova, a researcher at UAF’s International Arctic Research Center. “Subsea permafrost is losing its ability to be an impermeable cap.”

It’s not known how long the methane release has been going on. But models suggest that if just one percent of the methane contained in the region were released, it would cause rapid warming.

Earlier periods of rapid climate change have been associated with sudden releases of methane from the seabed.

During the ISSS expedition measurements of methane were made in the seabed, at different depths in the water and in the overlying air at over one hundred locations.

Combined with measurements from previous expeditions, it was found that methane concentrations in seawater are elevated in 80 percent of sea bottom samples and in more than half of the surface water samples and air samples.

Some areas had concentrations up to 100 times above the natural background levels, and the ISSS expedition discovered methane chimneys on the ocean floor and fields of methane bubbles that rose to the surface of the sea so fast that the methane did not have time to dissolve in the seawater.

“Our concern is that the subsea permafrost has been showing signs of destabilization already,” she said. “If it further destabilizes, the methane emissions may not be teragrams, it would be significantly larger.”

The full study appears in Science.

Overall, Apple’s iPad looks and behaves like a scaled-up version of an iPod Touch or iPhone, but there are some key differences that distinguish the iPad from its pocket-size comrades. One of these differences, surprisingly, is music playback.

Clicking on the iPod icon sitting in the virtual tray at the bottom of the iPad opens up a music browser that looks nothing like any previous generation of iPod or iPhone, but instead, works like a stripped-down version of Apple’s iTunes music software. There’s the familiar iTunes gray bar running across the top, with playback controls, a volume slider, a search box, and the little progress/scrubber bar. Playlists are perpetually pinned to a sidebar, along with icons for audio books, music, music videos, and podcasts.

Across the bottom you’ll find buttons for creating genius playlists or standard playlists (the latter, oddly enough, being a new feature), along with tabs to sort your music by songs, artists, albums, genres, or composers. I also noticed that pressing on the cover art in the bottom left corner will expand the artwork to full screen.

Podera Deskscape Reader
Podera Deskscape Reader

Check out the Podera Deskscape Reader which adds a wee bit of finesse to your working area, as it takes the opposite route of design by occupying too much space than it should. Functionally speaking, it doesn’t amount up to much either, being capable of reading just Memory Sticks, MMC and SD cards. Available in grey, green, orange, yellow and blue colors, the Podera Deskscape Reader retails for $30.77. At that price you can probably get a 55-in-1 memory card reader, although it won’t have the same level of aesthetic value with the Podera Deskscape Reader.

Bath-O-Matic A Joy To Use
Bath-O-Matic A Joy To Use

Looks like taking a bath is no longer a simple affair these days, not when you have home improvement ideas like the Bath-O-Matic. This device from Unique Automation is a digital bath filler that lowers the motorized plug, fills up the bathtub to a stored temperature of your liking at the correct depth, with the option to spice up the situation by adding some bubble bath and fragrances into the water. The Bath-O-Matic is hooked up to AMX and Crestron systems via RS-232 or TCP/IP, and comes with a touch screen interface for you to key in all the necessary details before you strip down for the day. The $8,000 asking price will probably cause most people to turn away, leaving this to be a plaything of the rich.

Hitachi W61H Gets E-Ink Display
Hitachi W61H Gets E-Ink Display

Now this is definitely one cell phone that all customization lovers would love to grab a hold of. The Hitachi W61H clamshell handset that will be made available this spring from KDDI features a black and white 2.7″ e-ink display known as “Silhouette screen” on the front, featuring 95 pre-installed graphic patterns where the user will be able to select to make it look as though you have a different color at all times. Those who are far-sighted ought to look into a viable business that offers pattern and picture downloading for such phones in the future. I’m just waiting for a colored display version to appear once they have sorted the battery issues out – black and white is a start, but color makes a whole world of difference.

Moldable Mouse Design Concept
Moldable Mouse Design Concept

Now this is definitely one left-hander-friendly mouse – the Moldable Mouse concept. This concept by Lite-On sees the mouse being made out of lightweight modeling clay, complete with a flexible polyurethane and nylon fabric cover which allows one to mold it into whatever shape that your hand loves. I guess this means the mouse can double up as a stress ball as well. Heck, even the radio-frequency controlled stick-on mouse buttons and touch-sensitive scroll pad can be placed in different positions according to your liking. Hopefully should it ever make it to production lines, the Moldable Mouse will come in more than just one color.

DEMO 08 – At Your Service Session
Support.com
Support.com is launching PC HealthCheck a free internet based service that check users’ PC on demand. Read more in my article

SupportSpace
I visited the SupportSpace booth yesterday and I saw a demo of the service. I like it a lot. It could be a great replacement of traditional phone-based Tech Support services. Directly on the home page, users can see the experts’ profiles, rates and ranking. Once the user has selected an expert to help to troubleshoot her/his computer, a chat session is engaged with her/him. Using a Remote Desktop like software with no client download, the expert conduct the maintenance task ordered.

Aternity
Aternity, an Intel Capital portfolio company, launches its platform that monitors desktop performance, application usage/usability, human productivity, and end-to-end performance of every application transaction. Any problems is identified and the computer user is notified.

Symantec
I already published about the Symantec Family Safety Initiative that helps parents with their children online safety. I like the fact that this solution requires the kids collaboration to work properly, and it does not invade their privacy too much: any content from their favorite social networking website site as private is not shown to the parents. Users can monitor accurately how popular their videos are and share the data with their colleagues.

Visible Measures
Visble Measures tracks users behavior with online video, their tools are capable of monitoring the audience of a video clip second by second. No 120GB PlayStation 3, According to Sony Europe

A recent rumor about a possible 120GB Playstation3 (PS3) was generating some buzz on the web, but Sony has responded officially to say that no such thing is in the works… at least in the UK.

“We do not currently have any plans to release a 120GB PlayStation 3 in the UK” (Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, SCEE)

The working is a little weird and I’m sure that someone will ask: “What about outside the U.K?”

EcoButton to Save the Planet by Shutting Down your PC
EcoButton to Save the Planet by Shutting Down your PC

This Eco Button connects via USB and basically puts your PC into sleep mode, saving precious Watts. It will also wake the PC up, when it’s time to work again. The interesting thing is that the bundled software will record the carbon units saved. At ubergizmo, we think that “if we can measure it, we will improve it” (if we care).

There’s no question that “Green” has become a marketing gimmick, even if there’s a real need to be greener. I wonder how many carbon units it takes to build the button and how polluting it will be once in the trash. wouldn’t you prefer a better designed one? $18 at eco button

The XPS M1730 will still retain its 17″ display, Core 2 Duo processors and dual drive configurations, although if you plan to run an SLI setup you’d best be near a power outlet at all times. Dell will also make this option available on its custom-themed World of Warcraft Edition. Prices start from $700 for this new notebook, and Dell has not forgotten about its older customers who can opt for the graphics upgrade program. Pricing details for the latter has yet to be announced.

Wiimote Loses Pale Face
Wiimote Loses Pale Face

The traditionally white Wiimote can now be accompanied by colored brethren, thanks to the efforts of Snakebyte who decided there are more than enough white Wiimotes in the market. Looking pretty identical to the real thing, you get a dose of different colors with a slightly more stylized button design. Initial models that roll out will come in black or bright purple, although I would like to see green, red and yellow join the fray. How about a retro NES color edition? Pokemon and Animal Crossing editions? These will retail for approximately $59 a pop when they’re released early next month, which is pretty steep since you can already get a game with that kinda dough.

Smart Carpet Assists The Fallen
Smart Carpet Assists The Fallen

We all know how prone the elderly are when it comes to accidental falls, and sometimes us kids worry as our aged parents are left all alone at home. Researchers at the University of Missouri claim that they have developed a ’smart carpet’ capable of electronically monitoring a senior’s location and sending out an alert in case of a fall. This new sensor can be printed on thin, flexible sheets using inexpensive organic ink, so cheapskates have no more excuse of not getting this for their parents. It is said that a commercial version could roll out in a couple of years’ down the road. This is definitely better than other solutions on the market since the individual in question does not have to be conscious to summon any help.

Wireless Charging for Upcoming WMG Devices
Wireless Charging for Upcoming WMG Devices

It is reported that Wireless Mobile Group (WMG) will integrate Slaspower’s wireless charging technology in the batteries of its smartphones. We can only hope that other vendors will adopt this or some thing similar that would make wireless charging more popular. Right now, it is unfortunately a small niche.

If you haven’t heard of SlashPower before, their wireless charging works by magnetic induction. It requires a module or preferably a complete integration in the device itself.

The blind and dyslexic now have a way to listen to printed words, thanks to the new knfbReader Mobile which brings together a Nokia N82 smartphone and technology from Kurzweil, resulting in the smallest text-to-speech reading device to date. The knfbReader Mobile allows users to take images of printed materials (menus, signs, notes) with the N82’s high resolution camera, where it will then process the captured image to read the material out aloud at the touch of a button in a synthesized voice. None of the N82’s other features will be disabled in anyway, so you can still enjoy MP3 playback and GPS navigation on the go.

Samsung Gloss On DVD Player
Samsung Gloss On DVD Player

Remember the great job that Samsung did with its laser printers last year? Well, the Korean company certainly knows how to turn on the style with this DVD player that comes with a cool, fingerprint-attracting, glossy black exterior. Forget plastic buttons that accompany most DVD players – you get touch sensitive controls with this model. Dubbed the Samsung DVD-F1080, this highly portable (and desirable) DVD player also features 1080p upscaling ability via HDMI as well as support for DivX, MP3, WMA, JPEG and MPEG-4 clips. Looks like a pretty interesting Valentine’s Day gift idea – imagine proposing with this, using a DVD inside that has recordings of all your favorite moments with the lady in your life so far! At $111 a pop, this is certainly way cheaper (and unexpected) than any run-of-the-mill restaurant proposals.

Skyfire To End Mobile Browser Wars

Looks like Skyfire could be the end all and be all when it comes to browsing the Internet on a Windows Mobile smartphone. This means you will be able to experience Flash advertisements, YouTube videos, MySpace and Facebook applications without any problem whatsoever. Compatible with both Windows Mobile 5.0 and 6.0 operating systems regardless of whether you’re using a touch screen or non-touch screen device, Skyfire provides a full desktop-like web browsing wherever you are. Too bad mobile device screens are still too small to fully experience portable desktop screens, unless integrated projectors are hurried out of the manufacturing line fast enough.
For folks who have recently purchased Windows Vista and have heard rumors of Windows 7 being released early next year, hold your ground. Microsoft has already issued an announcement from a company spokesperson that Vista’s successor would be way too far away for a commercial release next year. It will take approximately three years to develop, so I guess that’s a pretty safe bet that Vista will be around for still quite some time. Not as long as Windows XP, but it won’t be so soon before a successor comes around either. As for me, I’m still giving my XP plenty of love – how about you?

Capsule Fire Extinguisher Concept
Capsule Fire Extinguisher Concept

Now this is one idea that most of us would kick ourselves, asking, “Why didn’t I think about that before?”. The Capsule fire extinguisher concept comes in a capsule form factor (hence its name) that holds powder within, allowing firefighters to roll or throw it into the bowels of a fire to extinguish it. This allows one to help put out fires in hard to reach places, and the concept does mention about an oxygen tank located within the capsule itself for folks trapped in a fire – an essential ingredient to help keep someone alive during those moments. Unfortunately, I don’t think that’s such a good idea as the presence of oxygen will do nothing but further feed the fire.

I’m sure housewives all over the world will appreciate having this in their homes, especially with Valentine’s Day just around the corner. Priced at £349, the 14-minute wash cycle translates to a whole lot less energy consumed which keeps the earth greener as a result.

Google And LEGO Go Way Back

I’m sure many of us have already noticed Google’s tribute to LEGO’s 50th anniversary in the block building business (may Tetris hit the big 50 as well), and there’s more to it than just a fancy logo. Apparently, Google co-founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, once used LEGO bricks as an external low-cost and expandable casing for ten 4GB hard drives while developing Google’s search engine. That’s a long time ago – up to 10 years of rolling the clock back. Air Purifier Jacket
Air Purifier Jacket

Wearing a jacket comes in handy, especially during those cold winter months. Unfortunately, most of us probably sweat while wearing one considering the places we go to and errands we run, heading into alternating cold and hot environments. The Air Purifier Jacket ensures that there won’t be (that) much body odor left within whenever you take off the jacket thanks to an integrated air purifier within. Heck, it even has the fashion minded in…er, mind with detachable sleeves for the lumberjack look. Make a statement with the Air Purifier Jacket for 350 Euros.

XFPS Keyboard And Mouse On PS3
XFPS Keyboard And Mouse On PS3

XFPS has just released an adapter that allows one to plug in a USB or PS/2 mouse and keyboard, mapping it to the appropriate commands on your PS3 controller. I suppose this would definitely snag you an edge over those using the standard controller when engaged in an FPS title. Would you fork out $99 for this? I might be a bit reserved forking out that amount, considering there are only a small amount of games which allow you to use something more than the standard controller to play.

Robovie Freaks Me Out
Robovie Freaks Me Out

Take one look at Robovie and kindly confirm with me that his eyes are nothing short of scary. While his main purpose is to be a mall rat, waiting for lost and confused folks to approach him for directions, the manufacturers ought to come up with a more aesthetically pleasing front before I’d open my mouth – let alone kids who tend to gravitate towards all things cute and soft. Robovie claims to be able to keep charge of 1,000 square feet of space with its 16 cameras, 6 laser range finders and 9 RFID tags which monitor a moving crowd, using a carefully crafted algorithm to determine if they are lost or not. Currently, Robovie can monitor up to 20 people simultaneously, making slower-paced malls a better place for him to work in.

PEGA Vibrating Bag For SIXAXIS
PEGA Vibrating Bag For SIXAXIS

Folks who are still playing with their SIXAXIS controllers just because Sony screwed up with their DualShock controller in the earlier part of the PS3’s shelf life can now opt for a third party solution – the wrong idea-inducing Vibrating Bag. There is no word whether the vibration occurs only when the game generates a feedback signal or if it goes on and on ad infinitum. The latter would be especially distracting though, so logically speaker it ought to be the former. I don’t like the bulk that it adds to the SIXAXIS controller, but if you want to remain cheap and not pick up a DualShock, then this is but the next best thing for you. Strangely enough, it comes with an integrated FM radio.

HTC Mogul ROM Leaked
HTC Mogul ROM Leaked

Looks like HTC’s Mogul has a brand new ROM in town, and we know this courtesy of a leak. This new ROM claims to offer GPS support, EV-DO Rev. A action, and more among others. I’m afraid this ROM update might come a little too late, considering the device was rolled out last spring – that’s almost a full year by now with some rather crippled functions. The ROM version is still in beta mode with no indication of a commercial release, so download and flash this at your own risk.

Halo Energy Sword Replica
Halo Energy Sword Replica

Halo fans, rejoice! There is an Energy Sword replica up for grabs on eBay which currently stands at $236.50. Live out your Master Chief fantasies as you wield this life-size replica, although you won’t be able to mow down anyone with this. It measures 36″ x 14″, so I would highly recommend having adult supervision with this should you actually win the bid for your kid. The winning bid will not only receive the Energy Sword, it will also come with a collector’s card, a walnut wall plaque and a Certificate of Originality from creator Lionheartsrealm just in case somebody comes along to challenge the authenticity of your Energy Sword.

Walking Chair for the Lazy
Walking Chair for the Lazy

I don’t know how lazy you must be to pick up the Walking Chair, but this is just plain nuts! Designer Karl Emilio Pircher and Fidel Peugeot worked on this idea that is constructed from a bunch of chrome plated steel tubes, plastic, and houses an electronic heart within. Sure, this seater will bring you places (I wonder if it can handle stairs and slopes, or is it just limited to a level segment on the ground) but with a price tag of 15,000 Euros, your heart will probably make a quick jump to your mouth first.

Video of MacBook Air Battery Replacement
Video of MacBook Air Battery Replacement

Looks like we now have video proof of the ease of replacing the Macbook Air’s battery, thanks to the inquisitive team at Gizmodo. All you need is a type #0 Philips screwdriver and a gentle tug on the internal battery cable. The process consists of removing 10 screws to dislodge the bottom cover, while 9 other screws must be freed before the battery can get out of its chassis. No rocket science involved here.

Ricoh 500SE Scans Barcodes

Ricoh has a new digital camera in the form of the 500SE that is capable of scanning barcodes as well. It supports all popular 1D barcodes and can scan barcodes optically through its lens, with the option to augment it with the SE-4 laser-scanning module whenever you are faced with workflows that require laser scanning. Scanned barcode information will automatically be embedded directly into a data area within the JPEG files, where an on-board ‘data dictionary’ will give allowance for extra user-defined information including the photographer’s name or job number. Other features include 802.11b/g and Bluetooth connectivity for sheer wireless transfer bliss. The Ricoh 500SE retails for $899 while the SE-4 laser-scanning module is tipped to retail for $349.

    * Three USB 2.0 ports
* WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity
* 80GB hard drive
* 4GB RAM (max)
* SL7100 VL processor (don’t ask)
FlipSilent For Instant Silence
FlipSilent For Instant Silence

I like the FlipSilent software that actually turns your cell phone into silent mode by simply flipping it over, hence the name. Perfect for meetings as well as places of worship, making it easy for the older folk who still have not grasped the method to turn the phone into Silent Mode with a couple of button presses. Unfortunately, the FlipSilent software is good only with a Symbian S60 handset that comes with an accelerometer – which means only the Nokia N93i and N95 are the only viable candidates at the moment.

Talk about irony – the Bazooka Outdoor Tubbie Speakers come with a camouflaged exterior, presumably for you to carry it along while hunting some game. Common sense dictates that you’re supposed to be dead quiet while stalking your prey, and having beleaguered Britney blasting away is not the best way to snag an animal (or a human mate, mind you). Still, I suppose if you want some speakers to blend into your unkept garden, these war-ready speakers look set to rock and roll for $449.95 this March.

Bionic Eye To Help Blind See?
Bionic Eye To Help Blind See?

Biomedical engineers from the University of Southern California are currently working a design for a bionic eye that could one day restore sight to the blind. Not only that, this team has also filed for a patent, where a video camera will be implanted directly into the eye as a prosthesis to assist with vision problems. This camera that has been implanted at within the lens of the eye, taking into account the effect of the cornea has on incoming light, will then record images and send them over a wire to a chip located at the back of the eye which subsequently passes the image signals to nerve cells. With all these bionic improvements available, would we arrive at a future where folks are willing to trade in their perfectly fine natural body parts for something bionic?

LawnBott Gets Upgrade
LawnBott Gets Upgrade

For those who do not yet have kids who are old enough to mow the lawn as a chore, fret not. There is the LawnBott LB3200 that not only goes about its task without complaining or asking for higher wages, it is also Bluetooth-enabled, allowing one to control it remotely from a cell phone or laptop. You will first need to include the perimeter wire to set the boundary before unleashing the LawnBott LB3200. Capable of cutting on slopes up to 30 degrees in an area as large as 38,000 square feet, it will automatically return to its dock once it is running out of juice or when the job is complete. Don’t worry about coming home to a shredded pet as there’s a free-floating 360-degree bumper, a blade-stop sensor and an onboard alarm system to prevent untoward accidents. Is the Lawnbott LB3200 worth $3,250?

Panasonic CN-MP50D GPS system
Panasonic CN-MP50D GPS system

If you have trouble finding your way around, perhaps it is time to invest in a GPS navigation system. The Panasonic CN-MP50D GPS system isn’t any good in the US though, as its 2GB SD card comes pre-loaded with essential phone numbers and map information of 10 million points of interest in Japan. It will hit the Japanese market this February 12th for approximately $650 after conversion. Strange thing it lacks audio and video playback though – that’s like taking a few steps backwards compared to other GPS systems these days that seem to function more and more like PMPs. No idea if it will ever make it Stateside, but keep yourself occupied with the specifications below in the meantime.

    * Touch screen LCD display (272 x 480 pixels)
* SD memory card slot
* 4 hour battery life
* Memory storage for places up to 10 genres

A trio of AAA batteries offer up to 30 hours of soaked goodness, measuring jsut 90mm x 80mm x 80mm. The Bath Palette My Ocean can be taken home for $27.

Moonlight Speakers Turn On The Romance

Spending some time with your loved one under the moonlight can be very romantic, and these Moonlight Speakers help to usher in the loving feeling by concealing speakers which are capable of handling anywhere from 120 to 200 watts of amplification. These speakers also project sound in a 360-degree dispersion pattern, which means you get to listen to great sounding audio no matter where you’re standing. The party animals among you will love the color-changing LED bulb that add variety, while the durable weatherproof polyethelene shell used to make the globes are perfect for outdoor use. The Moonlight Speakers target nightclubs, but those with really large mansions might want to experiment by installing one of these at home.

Trev The Green Car

Not only is the Trev a green car (literally), it also helps keep the earth clean by running on a 7kWh 44kg lithium ion polymer battery. Don’t scoff at the Trev, as it can hit 100kph from a standstill in 10 seconds, with a top speed of 120kph. A full charge will provide a maximum running range of 150km. How much damage does it do to your wallet when you try to recharge it? Not much actually – just AUD$1 per 100 km, which is dirt cheap. Families can forget about this as the Trev is definitely no people mover, but meant for yuppies to impress their potential mates and just enough room at the back to throw a briefcase or two inside.

AT&T Offers SIM Card-Only Option
AT&T Offers SIM Card-Only Option

AT&T is now offering a SIM card-only option in their online score for just 5 bucks ($10 minus a $5 online discount), allowing you to have your very own AT&T line. This service probably targets those who already own an unlocked handset or an AT&T-locked wireless handset. It seems as though one can pair the SIM card with just about any of AT&T’s current plan offerings, although one still has to tie down their soul to the devil (AT&T in this case) for at least two years (unless you opt for the pre-paid plan, of course). Will this move cause you to head out to the east to pick up those drool-worthy unlocked phones instead of waiting for eternity for them to make an appearance Stateside?

DLO HomeDock HD Upscales Video
DLO HomeDock HD Upscales Video

If you happen to store most of your video library on your iPod, then the DLO HomeDock HD will increase the usefulness of your Cupertino-designed PMP even further. This device upscales video from your iPod to 1080i or 720p, depending on your preference. It can connect to any high definition TV and dock-compatible iPod, boasting an HDMI port in the process. The wireless remote (100 foot range) makes it a snap to control the HomeDock HD no matter where you are in the living room, featuring an on-TV interface which is also capable of displaying iPod album art. Other connectivity options include S-Video and RCA for those who have not yet made the jump to high definition TV. The DLO HomeDock HD is tipped to ship in Q2 2008 for $249.99.

Sharp E-Dictionaries With Backlit Display
Sharp E-Dictionaries With Backlit Display

Sharp has a couple of electronic dictionaries from its Papyrus line known as the PW-GT570 and PW-AT770, with the former coming in white, pink and blue while the latter has silver, black and red colors to choose from. Both of them share the following :-

    * 5.5″ high resolution LCD monochrome display
* Backlit display for reading in the dark
* Secondary backlit touch screen display with handwriting recognition
* Support for Japanese, English, Chinese and Korean languages
* Text-to-speech engine with a vocabulary of over 50,000 words

Both of them are powered by a couple of AAA batteries that offer at best 120 hours of continuous use, but I think real life performance would be lower that quoted figure. The Sharp Papryus PW-AT770 and PW GT570 will hit Japan in January and February respectively.

BlackBerry 9100 To Get HSDPA

Those who were deflated with news that the BlackBerry 9000 (known in other circles as the 9100 as well) did not come with 3G connectivity, rejoice! RIM has just changed the details for the 9000, throwing in UMTS and HSDPA into the fray. In addition, BGR thinks the operating system will also see an upgrade to version 5.0 which will be available by the end of this year. This means the 9000 will ship with the standard version 4.3.2, if their punts are correct. Are you holding out for this new BlackBerry?

Samsung Silencio Canister Vacuum
Samsung Silencio Canister Vacuum

Check out the Silencio Canister Vacuum from Samsung that in a strange way, somewhat resembles Master Chief’s helmet. Samsung claims that its multi chamber system is capable of trapping up to 99.3% of dust, boasting a suction power rating of 360 air watts. I wonder whether there will be any Halo fans picking this model up while spray painting it with some gold and green in order to make it look as though Master Chief was in the house. Other features include a HEPA 13 filtration system that catches 99.95% of micro particles, and Silver Nano technology that prevents bacteria and other odor-causing agents from building up.

More Dual-Core Celerons Coming

Intel looks set to release more dual-core Celeron processors sometime int he second quarter of this year, to take over where the E1000 and E1200 series left off. This new line will be known as the E1400, and it comes with :-

    * 2GHz core frequency
* 800MHz FSB
* L2 cache of 512KB
* Support for Intel 64, XD Bit (Execute Disable Bit) and Speed Step technology

LED Cell Phone
LED Cell Phone

While the world is enamoured with touch sensitive devices, along comes the humble LED cell phone that takes the opposite route to that of a smartphone’s. The LEDs aren’t there to make it look good, instead they all have some sort of function. You won’t find any display or touch screen, just plain old LEDs. These patterns change depending on the different functions you access. Behind the keys are a bunch of touch sensors that await your command. No lithium ion for this, just a couple of plain old AAA batteries will do. If you happen to lug around rechargeable AAAs, there is a USB interface which provides on-the-go charging.

MacBook Air Gets Rival
MacBook Air Gets Rival

The MacBook Air has not even been out for more than a week, and other laptop manufacturers are already rolling up their sleeves to release a rival. Toshiba has the R500 that comes in two flavors – with the €2,500 11J model leading the way by boasting a 64GB SSD and the lack of an optical drive. Toshiba also goes up against Steve Jobs by laying claim to the thinnest and lightest laptop in the world, weighing 779 grams and measuring 25.5mm in thickness. Other features include WiFi connectivity, Bluetooth, and HSPDA among others. Between the two, which would you choose?

Computer Plays With Itself
Computer Plays With Itself

No, not in that way. Researchers have come up with a computer that has an unending love for Pac-man, and it can even play the game a whole lot better than humans. Istvan Szita and Andras Lorincz from the Department of Information Systems at Eotvos University in Hungary have done just that, and through their research they are continuously trying to find out whether the AI has many more loopholes within. I wonder when will computer AI be smart enough to be the ultimate killing machines as found in Resident Evil as well as the Terminator series?

WiFi Activity Dictates DS Game
WiFi Activity Dictates DS Game

Metro-Wardive is one interesting game for the Nintendo DS, whereby it uses the integrated WiFi connectivity to detect hotspot activity around you in order to generate a unique and interesting gaming environment. Names of hotspots in the vicinity are transformed into enemies which aim to take over your Wardive crystal, where you use your stylus (or finger, whatever rocks your boat) to fend off those attacks by putting shields up. It would be interesting to walk around town and see what the different hotspots serve up in the game. This highly adaptive game would be more interesting in a bustling city compared to smaller towns where everyone else is still stuck on a wired connection.

Belkin Conserve Surge Protector
Belkin Conserve Surge Protector

Belkin has just released the Conserve – an 8-outlet surge protector which aims to lower energy consumption by doing away with wasteful standby power. While this is supposed to help lower the overall impact on the environment while saving you a fair amount of dimes in the process, I would say an impact could only be noticed if the Conserve was adopted across a wide scale. Having just one person use the Conserve at home will probably not make a dent. The 8 surge-protected outlets consist of half a dozen “switchable” and two “always-on” outlets for easier energy use control. The Belkin Conserve retails for $49.95 each.

Talk about small – Brando’s tiny USB Bluetooth V2.0+EDR Adapter fits just nicely into your notebook or PC’s USB port to provide Bluetooth functionality. Sounds like the perfect accessory for folks who want to transfer information wirelessly. Unfortunately, it only complies with Bluetooth 1.1 specifications and not 2.0 like many other Bluetooth devices in the market. Still, you get a healthy 10 meter working range with a maximum data rate transmission of 723 Kbps (real world usage will be slower). This 2 gram accessory supports up to seven Bluetooth devices simultaneously. Brando is currently offering the USB Bluetooth V2.0+EDR Adapter for $24.

Neon Electric Sneakers Wow

Just take a look at this neon shoe that boasts urban Japanese icons as well as city names in honor of the Asics sub-brand Onitsuka Tiger. Flashlight DVR Captures Memories
Flashlight DVR Captures Memories

The Flashlight DVR from Swann Security is a pretty interesting device as it comes with night vision capability, enabling one to record whatever journey made through the darkness of the night. In addition, it features a microphone to pick up noises of things that go bump in the night. I think one will see healthy sales of this for those who are knee-deep in the paranormal as well as security guards who often patrol the graveyard shift. The Flashlight DVR has enough memory to record for up to 8 hours of video which can be subsequently transferred over to the computer via USB. It retails for a rather hefty $399, but think of all the night videos you’ll be able to shoot!

Ciggy-sized Unmanned Aircraft
Ciggy-sized Unmanned Aircraft

Researchers at Oklahoma State University have collaborated with DARPA to release an unmanned aircraft that is tiny enough to fit in a soldier’s pocket. It will use a futuristic propulsion system that consists of plasma thrusters and no moving parts, measuring anywhere from a foot to under six inches. The ultimate aim would be making them small (and functional) enough to be pulled out from a sixpack in a flash. Unlike the large UAVs used in war zones these days, this new line will be extremely tiny and more discreet, making them much more useful when it comes to scouting out the enemy territory without risking human life and limb.

MacBook Air Battery Replacement A Cinch
MacBook Air Battery Replacement A Cinch

While everyone thought that the MacBook Air battery replacement process would be complicated, AppleInsider thinks otherwise. They claim that there is no need for special tools or knowledge if you want to swap out the MacBook Air’s battery. All you need to do is uncover the MacBook Air’s bottom cover, unscrew the battery from the chassis and unplug it from the circuit board with a tug. It is not soldered onto the board like many believed. From the sounds of it, it will probably take less than three minutes to perform this little operation. You could, of course, settle for Apple’s $129 MacBook Air Out-of-Warranty Battery Replacement Program that requires approximately 5 days to complete.

Looks like Apple lovers are dime a dozen, and they would automatically defend to the death any negative press about their beloved company. For such dedication, Steve Jobs ought to reward these faithful fans (hopefully he doesn’t call them rude) with the iRing from Victor Solo. Currently a concept, this ring comes with a touch-sensitive band that controls media playback as well as volume. It will communicate with the iPhone/iPod using Bluetooth connectivity, but it makes me wonder how so many electronics and a battery can be stored in something so small. Maybe that’s why it will still remain a concept – at least for now.

That’s pretty high for everyday use as it makes it more suitable for gamers as well as those who deal with extremely precise mouse movements in their work, but for ordinary folks like you and I who spend most of the day reading blogs and other news sites, this $49 mouse would be overkill. Unless, of course, you want your HP computer to come with a matching-brand mouse. Features include an adjustable sensitivity, a scroll wheel, standby and sleep power saving modes.

PocketGuitar Plucks Virtual Strings
PocketGuitar Plucks Virtual Strings

If you love playing the guitar, then the PocketGuitar virtual guitar application for the iPhone and the iPod touch ought to be right up your alley. Developed as a Google Code project by Shinya Kasatani, this allows you to recycle the songs on your iPod/iPhone for some strumming action. I say, if you want an alternative string plucking experience, there is always Guitar Hero III and mi Jam Guitar. A screen protector is highly recommended with your iPhone/iPod if you plan on installing the PocketGuitar.

Handpresso for Caffeine Addicts
Handpresso for Caffeine Addicts

I must say, the coffee served at CES events wasn’t exactly up to scratch, so a coffee addict will definitely want to keep the Handpresso in mind the next time he/she travels to an event. This device functions with pre-made espresso packets, allowing you to indulge in fancy coffee no matter where you are. All you need to do is crank up the hand pump, load your packet of coffee, add some hot water and you’re good to go. Make sure you have a nice, big mug to hold that precious coffee as there is nothing quite like a hot cup of your favorite joe to kick start the day. The portable Handpresso is strictly for serious coffee addicts, as the $150 price tag clearly puts it out of range of an impulse purchase.

Razor Horizon Home Theater
Razor Horizon Home Theater

Convergence devices rarely excel in all its functions, but if you aren’t a purist then the Razor Horizon Home Theater might me a viable solution for those who live in cramped spaces. This device might not win any points when it comes to design, but in terms of functionality, who can argue with support for DVD-R/RW, CD-R/RW, MP3, VCD, SVCD, WMA, MPEG 1, MPEG 2, MPEG 4, and JPEG formats among others? Not only that, the $399.95 pretty much seals the deal for me, considering how you’re getting an entire sound system complete with a DVD player (not that you don’t have one already) in a package that fits nicely underneath your wall-mounted flat panel TV.

Software that Talks to Dogs
Software that Talks to Dogs

Scientists in Hungary have been cracking their heads to analyze dogs’ barks so that their software will be able to figure out just exactly how Lassie and friends are trying to say. To date, software has been tested which distinguishes the emotional reaction of 14 pooches to half a dozen situations including being alone, seeing a ball, fighting, playing, encountering a stranger and going for a walk. While a perfectly accurate translation is pretty far off in the future, I would prefer to see a software that translates cat speak as I need to find out if our feline friends are really that arrogant. In the meantime, I can try Meowlingual, a cat-translator gadget, for dogs, there’s Bowlingual.

Pioneer MEP-7000 Pro DJ device

Pioneer has released its MEP-7000 device that targets the modern DJ who loathes to carry around a large stack of vinyls and regular CDs to a set. It comes with dual DVD drives, enabling the DJ to make full use of traditional audio CDs in addition to AAC and MP3 tracks. The inclusion of USB ports also enable flash drives, external hard drives and other removable storage to be used whenever one wants to play and mix music. Should you hook up the MEP-7000 to a Windows-based PC, you get direct control over Pioneer’s very own DJ software. The MEP-7000 can also be used independently, whereby its 4.3″ LCD display functions as a command center whilst the two OLED screens offer pitch and miscellanous track information for both sources in a mix. The Pioneer MEP-700 will ship this June for $2,299.

Philips has more MP3 players
Philips has more MP3 players

Philips certainly isn’t giving up in the iPod-saturated MP3 player market by releasing a slew of new models and teaming up with RealNetworks to enable Rhapsody on its line of GoGear MP3 players. Each of these MP3 players will come with Bluetooth connectivity, with the SA65×5 model boasting the unique ability to record TV directly from a composite or S-Video source. Will these end the iPod dominance? Definitely not, but it is great for those who like to have an unending buffet spread of music with a monthly fee that won’t hit your pockets too hard. Pricing details for its new players are as follows :-

    * SA6545 4GB for $179, SA6585 8GB for $199
* SA5245BT 4GB for $139, SA5485BT 8GB for $159
Carl Zeiss Cinemizer at MacWorld
Carl Zeiss Cinemizer at MacWorld

Carl Zeiss introduced its Cinemizer video eyewear that simulates the equivalent of a 45″ TV at a distance of 78″, making this yet another offering in the growing (and should I say, bloated) eyewear market for the iPod. While the Carl Zeiss name is more famous for its range of optics in cameras, this maiden effort comes with a wired remote control that helps you command the basics of video playback, including play, stop and pause. The battery has already been integrated into the iPod dock, and you can use the Cinemizer with video sources other than the iPod. Each Cinemizer display features VGA resolution and can even be adjusted to fit folks who are already wearing glasses thanks to the adjustable dopter settings. They will roll out in Germany sometime next month or early March, retailing in the region of $540 a pop.

Altec Lansing T612 Speaker Dock
Altec Lansing T612 Speaker Dock

Looks like iPhone and iPod owners have yet another speaker dock to choose from thanks to Altec Lansing and its T612 speaker dock which was released at the recently concluded CES 2008. What makes this speaker dock special for the iPhone is the fact that you can use it as a rather bulky hands free unit whenever there is an incoming call on your iPhone, interrupting the current playing song long enough until you (or the caller, whoever comes first) hang(s) up. According to the press release, Altec Lansing’s effort makes the T612 the first dock of its kind to be able to function that way with the iPhone, and I am very sure it won’t be the last either. There is no word on pricing, but if you base it on history, the T612’s predecessor went for £140.

Hitachi 1.5 HDTV
Hitachi 1.5 HDTV

You have guessed right: this is a 1.5 inches thick Plasma HDTV and yes, that’s the new trend. With no room to go up in resolution (1080p is the “ultimate” resolution – for a while) HDTV makers are seeking the next top item on anyone’s list: thin and light. It also has additional brains and supports stuff like Wireless HD and wireless content streaming.

Of course, there were some pretty exciting uber-thin HDTVs at CES 2008 (Samsung ultra-slim , Pioneer Kuro 9mm) but the Hitachi has something that others don’t: it will be on the market in the next few months. That’s what Hitachi says…

Steve Jobs Denies That Chine iPhone Talks Halted

Recently, there was news that the talks between China Mobile and Apple had stopped. It is unlikely that anyone thought that the deal was cancelled altogether, but that it was a “pause” because both parties could not reach an agreement.

Anyhow, Steve jobs confirmed that negotiations are still going on and that Apple is still interested. Apple surely is and Mobile China is also very interested, but it feels that it has the upper-hand in the negotiations. Unlike wireless carriers in the west who stomp each other to get Apple’s phone, I imagine that China mobile saying: “How badly do you want my 350M customers?”

Scientists Grow a Heart
Scientists Grow a Heart

Not really “gadgety” but look at this: Scientists at the University of Minnesota have announced that they have engineered a (rat) heart by growing muscle and endothelial (vein coating) cells in a “gelatin” heart-shaped scaffold that also had all the necessary conduits. At the end, the heart could pump at 1/4th of a normal heart rate.

It’s not operational yet, but that is a remarkable milestone on the road to possibly “grow organs”. AP video

Lussedia Luxury Seat

Lussedia luxury seat

The Lussedia luxury seat is definitely a piece of furniture that will pamper your body the moment you plop yourself into it. Designed by Dutch designer Gianni Orsini, this seat is constructed from leather, silk and 24-carat gold. This concept will be custom made and work is currently being done to figure out the finer and ergonomic aspects in both upright and reclined positions. First introduced to the Millionaire Fair in Amsterdam last December, you can be sure that the final product won’t be easy on your wallet as you’ll probably need at least half a dozen zeros after a digit in your bank account to afford one for your opulent home.

Acer to Launch Low-Cost Notebooks in the First Half of 2008
Acer to Launch Low-Cost Notebooks in the First Half of 2008

Acer is going head to head with ASUS and its blockbuster Eee PC in the low-cost laptop space. Digitimes reports that Acer will get Wistron to manufacture these new notebooks. 8 and 9″ LCD displays will come from AU Optronics. It is not known if Acer will design the notebook or if Wistron will do the job for them.

I don’t see how Acer will beat Asus in cost or design, given that Asus has more control over it and a good design team, but we’ll know soon enough. This move confirms the fact that good design, small size and low-cost is the “new cool” these days.

Mineral Oil Extreme Computer Cooling

You have heard of liquid cooling for computers or even game consoles. It usually consists of cooling a heat sink with water instead if fresh air – just like a car engine. This photo shows a PC totally immersed in mineral oil to let the oil absorb the heat and cool the components. This is not the first time that someone uses an oil bath to cool a computer, but this attempt looks better than the one that we mentioned last year. Video in the full post.

Samsung SGH i900 Touch Display Phone

Touch displays are seen as the new wireless promised land these days. The SGH-i900 is Samsung’s latest attempt to get a piece of the action: this phone has 3G and a GPS, two items that tops iPhone owners’ whish list. It will also come with applications like MSN Messenger, the Web Browser Opera, and many others. However I don’t think that this will come even close to the mobile Mac OS X… As I said before, having cool hardware is not enough these days. This is just my own speculation – let’s wait and see what comes out of this.

AT&T Business on Fire, Really
AT&T Business on Fire, Really

AT&T has to replace 17,000 batteries used in network cabinets after four equipment fires in the last two years. Avestor, the battery maker is out of business (I wonder why) and can’t help find if the problem affects a particular series of batteries or all of them. AT&T will therefore have to replace the whole installed base, which will cost many millions and a lot of time.

“It looks like a multimillion-dollar job, considering the cost of replacement batteries plus the labor to install them. They’ll probably need to change the wiring to the batteries, too.” (Kermit Ross, Analyst)

Alienware Area-51 m15x Available

The Area-51 m15x is a high-end laptop that packs a lot of punch, but in a form-factor that many would deem too bulky: 1.3 x 14.55 x 10.73” and 7 lbs. For that price, you will get the highest performing components and small details like an illuminated keyboard that is amazingly absent from high-end Vaio laptops! Below is the ($2999) high-end configuration that I would go for. what about you? (Configuration page)

    * 15.4” 1920×1200 display
* 512MB GeForce 8800M GTX
* Intel Core 2 Duo T7700 2.4Ghz (adding $650 for an additional 400Mhz is not worth it)
* 4GB RAM (3GB would have been better, but I don’t see the option), you can also buy the RAM separately
* Intel Turbo Memory ($40 is expensive for a flash drive, but the integration is better than having an USB stick on the side)
* 200GB 7200RPM HDD
* 8X Dual Layer DVD Burner
* WiFi-N

Under the Skin Microchip Tagging for Convicts in the UK
Microchip implant

The UK government is discussing the introduction of computer chips implanted under the skin of offenders in order to reduce prison overcrowding, They plan to monitor convicts whereabouts using these chips and satellite technology. Liberty, a civil right group, has criticized the project, arguing that it would degrade prisoners and hinder their rehabilitation.

In my opinion, jail time is more degrading than being at home and monitored using this kind of technology.

Parrot SK 4000: Bluetooth Hands-Free Motorcycle Kit

[CES 2008] I saw the Parrot SK 4000 at ShowStoppers at CES last week and I finally have the time to publish about it. With this kit you can make and take calls, listen to FM radio or to your favorite digital music while riding your motorcycle. The microphone is mounted on a flexible coupling and the headset speakers are positioned inside the helmet. It links automatically to your Bluetooth A2DP enabled cell phone and you can plug in an iPod or other music player.

It is easy to access all devices functions using the remote control (photo: the device in front of the helmet) that mounts on the handlebars. You can browse your phone book and initiate a phone call via the Text-to-Speech technology.

New GMAIL Interface for the iPhone
New GMAIL Interface for the iPhone

Google has update the user interface for Gmail by adding Ajax code to avoid page refreshes. Also, the auto-complete has been added. From the Google Gmail blog:

“We also implemented two of the coolest and most requested features for this release: pre-fetching and auto-complete. Now when you use Google on your iPhone, Gmail will automatically pre-load all your most recent messages for you. So when you decide to read a message it will be on your screen in a snap… “

“With auto-complete you can often get the right email address on your screen within 2-3 key strokes.”

So, how do you like it?

Concealed Weapon Detector to be Deployed in the U.S?
Concealed Weapon Detector to be Deployed in the U.S?

I’ve seen the concept on TV a couple of years ago, but apparently, the U.S government is purchasing twelve concealed weapons detectors from QinetiQ. This particular one seems to be based on microwaves that detect things that are denser than human flesh and clothes, but I have not seen the detailed specs (more information on QinetiQ’s site).

There is also competing system that works by recognizing the magnetic signature of weapons logged in a database.

Saver Clip Concept Measures Electric Consumption
Saver Clip Concept Measures Electric Consumption

“If you can measure it, you can improve it”. That is very true, especially when it comes to energy consumption. As consumers, we are not really aware of how much we consume until the bill comes. It stings a little, and then we forget about it until the next one. At least, that’s true for me.

This concept would measure how much electricity is used and displays it for all to see, reminding users of how much is used, saved, or wasted. I’d like to suggest sending the information to a display, the Media Center or wherever the eyes are looking at. Head to YankoDesign for more images.

Intel Shelton 08 for Ultra-Mobile PCs to Launch in Q3
Intel Shelton 08 for Ultra-Mobile PCs to Launch in Q3

The Shelton 08 ultra-low cost, low-power platform should be launched in the third quarter of this year, according to news reports coming from Taiwan. Originally aimed at the developing countries market, Shelton 08 is so cheap to produce that it is expected to power system that would cost between $100 and $300.

The interesting bit for us is that this will lead to more small and cheap laptops like the Asus Eee (or the less sexy classmate).

Nokia N95 From Rogers Wireless?
Nokia N95 From Rogers Wireless?

We know that the Nokia N95 is set to arrive in the USA, as soon as negotiations with AT&T or T-Mobile are over, but it looks like Rogers wireless will resell it for the Canadian market. The hint came from a drop-down menu in the game download area, which shows the N95 in the list of supported phones.

Crysis Running on Integrated Graphics

I usually don’t pay attention to the low-end integrated graphics but I don’t think that there was a single integrated chip that could run Crysis before this. In this case, we are looking at a GeForce 8200 motherboard GPU running Crysis at 800×600, which is remarkable.

If you don’t know what “integrated graphics” means, it is simply the cheapest category of graphics processor (GPU). It means that low-cost computer shipping (in June) with this chipset will be able to “run” a game like Crysis – talk about raising the bar…

Excellent RSS Feed Readers from NewsGator, now Free!

I missed this while I was running around at CES, but NewsGator has announced that its strong line-up of RSS readers is now available for free. This includes FeedDemon (Windows), NetNewsWire (Mac) and NewsGator Go!

Now, there’s no reason not to try these great RSS readers. For my part, I have been using FeedDemon for a while, but I ultimately preferred Google Reader because I use multiple computers.

Chinese iPhone Talks Break-Off
Chinese iPhone Talks Break-Off

MacDailyNews has reported that the talks between Apple and China Mobile have not been going well. It would seem obvious that revenue sharing is at the heart of the problem and we can only imagine that China Mobile does not want to pay what AT&T is currently paying. Unfortunately for Apple, China Mobile is in an awesome negotiating position: they have 350M customers (or about 70% market share in China), which is probably 8x what any U.S carrier has.

Will Apple back down on its demands? Not for now. In the meantime, Chinese customers can enjoy countless iPhone clones.

Belt Buckle camcorder to spy on
Ajoka Buckle DVR

If you plan any secret video surveillance or covert operation, this device is perfect for the job, according to Ajoka, the manufacturer. The Buckle DVR looks like any other belt, except that it is equipped with a built in Micro camcorder, recording in 3GP video format captured at 15 fps, 176×144 resolution, with 3 hours of battery life and capturing up to 33 hours of video on a 1GB Micro SD card. It connects and charges via a USB cable, and accepts up to 2 GB MiniSD card.

Given the specific location of the camcorder on the body, I am wondering what kind of secret videos could show up on YouTube coming from this gadget

iRiver eBook Coming Soon?
iRiver eBook coming soon?

iRiver is reportedly working on an eBook concept that would also allow hand-writing notes. The concept in the photo is an interesting rendering, but we will have to see how it performs, if the idea comes to fruition. Many of us would like to see a connected device like the Kindle, with better distribution software (like iTunes) and an easier way to get free content, compared to emailing PDF files to the device.

I’m pretty sure that iRiver can create a wonderful device, but I’m not so confident in their capacity to build the distribution medium or negotiate with a wireless carrier… Hey, may be WiFi would be a good start.

Netflix Expands Unlimited Streaming Access

After a short test period of providing unlimited movie streaming, Netflix has decided to expand the access to more of its subscribers: “Beginning today, all Netflix subscribers on unlimited rental plans, which start as low as $8.99 a month, will be able to stream as many movies and TV episodes as they want on their PCs, choosing from a library of over 6,000 familiar movies and TV episodes”.

It doesn’t cost more, so it’s hard to complain, but I wish to see more interesting movies/shows available.

Steve Jobs MacWorld 2008 Keynote Leaked? Probably Not

On the eve of MacWorld 2008, a rumor about a potential leak of Steve Job’s keynote speech on wikipedia is spreading on the web like wildfire. I personally think that this is a fake that looks like a mix of “wish list” and “predictions”.

I have not read previous notes from Steve Jobs, but I do not imagine that they would look like that. Anyhow, this is just my opinion, so take a look at the leak (on pocket-lint), and tell us what you think of it.

Creative inPerson Hands-On
Creative inPerson Hands-On

Our friends from Krunker have published an interesting hands-on with the Creative inPerson, a video phone that was recently cleared by the FCC. Creative markets it as a video conferencing system. In case you haven’t read our previous article, the inPerson connects using wired or wireless internet. Users need a monthly subscription that is said to be “low cost” (to be defined) in addition of the device itself, sold for $520.

Althought the quality of the audio/video is said to be very good, we think that this is way too expensive for consumers. For businesses it is different because they buy teleconferencing hardware/software from Polycom or Cisco that are much more expensive than this.

Soundcast SpeakerCast

Soundcast SpeakerCast

[CES 2008] Here’s yet another wireless speaker system for indoor use (unlike the weatherproof OutCast) – the Soundcast SpeakerCast. It works in the same manner as the OutCast, except that this comes in a rectangular form factor and is definitely not waterproof, so you’d best just leave it in the living room. It is now available for $399 at a retail store near you. Check out the other specifications below :-

    * 50-watt digital amplifier
* Amplified stereo speaker enclosure with two 2″ full range drivers within
* Functions on 2.4GHz band
* 150-foot range
* Includes iCast transmitter for use with iPod
* Connectivity via auxiliary input/output jack
* SRS 3D sound field expansion

HyperDrive COLORSPACE gets an upgrade

HyperDrive COLORSPACE gets an upgrade

[CES 2008] Remember the HyperDrive COLORSPACE that you saw last year? Well, there is a new version that will be released this month known as the COLORSPACE O. It shares the same dimensions as the previous COLORSPACE, measuring 133mm x 75mm x 25mm while parading a new and improved QVGA LCD screen (larger, too) at 3.2″ with 262k colors. I like the automatic image orientation that is useful when you’re previewing photos of different orientations. Unfortunately, it supports 7 less memory card types compared to the previous COLORSPACE’s 18. Other than that, everything else is pretty much the same. The COLORSPACE O will hit the streets sometime this month for $249. You’ll need to supply your very own 2.5″ hard drive though. For those who are out of the loop, the COLORSPACE O is a memory card backup device that does away with the need for a computer.

Aigopen: the reading pen for listening to books

[CES 2008] Aigo, the leading brand for Mp3 players, PMP and portable storage devices in China, launched this unique gadget in December for the Chinese market. Looking for distributors in the US, they are exhibiting their Aigopen at CES.

By pointing the pen to an image, users can listen to the story related to this image, either in Chinese or in English. To switch from one language to the other is easy: you just need to push a button.

The pen comes with earbuds and books that have been specifically printed to support this technology.
The Forbidden City and some Museums in China have already ordered the pen, Aigo is hoping that book publishers and cultural organizations in the US would like to do the same. If you are a potential client, feel free to email us, we will forward to the Business Development Managers at Aigo.

[CES 2008] This is the message from Databank Commerce Corp, and I guess that it worked, because it caught my attention as I walked by, looking for gadgets. Soundcast OutCast wireless speaker system

Soundcast OutCast wireless speaker system

[CES 2008] Soundcast has rolled out its OutCast all-weather outdoor speaker system that targets music enthusiasts, and I must say the demonstration sounded pretty good. This weatherproof system has a charge time of approximately 1.5 hours (2 hours if you’re using it to play something), while it claims to last up a dozen hours even at full blast. Audio is transmitted via the 2.4GHz spectrum, and each transmitter has three frequencies to choose from. This is more a home solution than a commercial one, although you could use it in a small store if you’d like. There is a 350 foot range with this, and it works just fine with any audio device that takes advantage of the auxiliary input/output jack. The OutCast is now available for $699 a pop.

    * One 8″ downward-firing woofer
* Four 3″ high frequency drivers in an omni-directional array
* 100 watt digital amplifier
* Constructed of water resistant plastic
* Internal AC power supply

Serenata: Bang & Olufsen and Samsung mobile phone

[CES 2008] I was so happy to be able to get my hands on the Serenata yesterday! I love the form factor so much, it is so well crafted and so unique. Unfortunately this phone will not be available in the US. Equipped with the ICEpower amplifiers and 2 high quality speaker units, this phone becomes a surprisingly powerful stand alone mini speaker.

The wheel feels great and gives a fluid movement to the thumb. The user interface is not very practical when it comes to enter a phone number, the idea is to have your entire phone book already stored in the device, the navigation with the wheel is then fast.
It is available in Europe for 900 euros without VAT, it will not be sold in the USA, check out the technical features on the Serenata website or the UK product page

BeoVision 8: entry level LCD HDTV from Bang & Olufsen
Bang & Olufsen LCD HDTV

[CES 2008] Bang & Olufsen launched this innovative LCD HDTV (720p) for the US market at CES. For this cutting edge manufacturer an entry level price point starts at $3950.00 well, thats certainly less than the 8 K for the other HDTV in this line The design is extremely innovative with the possibility to place this TV anywhere in a house: on a stand, on a TV bench, on a table and even on the floor, which might appeal to the younger audience they are trying to target.

Many flat-screen television produce a flat sound, so designer David Lewis created the Orchestra Pit feature, in order to move the sound forward and up like in a real orchestra pit. Basically, the bass cabinet in front of the screen containing a down facing bass speaker provides a firm foundation for movies and music while the 2 front units are tuned specifically for the reproduction of the human voice. I had a demo at the company suite at CES, and the sound is very good and has more relief than regular LCD TV units.

BeoVision 8 will be available in all Bang & Olufsen showrooms by February 2008. MSRP $3950.00.
Ad Notam parades mirror TVs

Ad Notam parades mirror TVs

[CES 2008] Mirror TVs are old hat by now, but Ad Notam’s booth was certainly interesting to look at as they presented a fair bit of variety. The Ad Notam representative claimed that these custom displays measure anywhere from 2.5″ to 3.9″ thick while featuring low heat emission. The power source is located outside, hence the opportunity to keep temperatures low. The bathroom units are (naturally) waterproof, and the wires are all protected with a metal pipe. There isn’t any specific price tags attached to these displays, but logic dictates they ought to retail for a premium over regular LCD TVs. There’s a new feature available with their line now – a wireless bathroom mirror TV. Indulgence or necessity? You decide with your wallet.

Brica does 8 megapixels on its phone

Brica does 8 megapixels on its phone

[CES 2008] Looks like China is catching up with the rest of the camera phone world in terms of megapixels with the Brica KT600 handset touching the 8 megapixel mark. You don’t get any sort of fancy optics with this unlike Sony Ericsson and Nokia offerings, but the KT600 ought to more than capture decent images on the go in 8 megapixel glory and the Xenon flash light. The KT600 also does video capture, but you can forget about 3G with this since GPRS is about as fast as it can go where mobile data is concerned. The FCC have not yet taken a look at this, so until then there won’t be any word on pricing or availability.

    * VGA MPEG4 30fps recording
* 900/1800/1900 GSM
* GPRS connectivity
* Xenon flash light
* miniSD memory card slot

SkullCandy new headset with SD card
SkullCandy SD card headset

[CES 2008] I met with SkullCandy COO, Jeremy Andrus, and he showed me this new product hidden in a room in the back of the booth. Users load the SD card with music, plug it in the headset and thats it, they are ready to go on the slopes. The product will come with pre-loaded SD cards from SkullCandys music partners, thats even less work to do!
It will ship in Spring 2008, more photos in the full post.

Foxda 6687 MP3 player pulls a Sony

Foxda 6687 MP3 player pulls a Sony

[CES 2008] Foxda’s 6687 MP3 player takes its styling cues from Sony, featuring a negative LCD display that can be seen only when you activate it, otherwise the screen disappears into the glossy and shiny background. I’d say you would best get some sort of protective case (or the Invisible Shield) for it lest it picks up nicks and scratches the moment you open the box.

    * Supports MP3, WMA and VBR formats
* Memory range from 128MB to 4GB
* Multi-language options
* FM stereo tuner and optional FM recording
* Negative LCD display
* Auto-power off
Q-Cute MP3 player

Q-Cute MP3 player

[CES 2008] The Q-Cute MP3 player ain’t for serious geek types, but they make pretty interesting gifts for kids and the young-at-heart. It comes in the form of a cartoony animal, complete with a backpack that actually stores the pair of headphones. There’s a wide variety of animal styles to choose from (monkey, white bear, pig, hare, dog, etc), and each of them carry 1GB of memory for all your MP3, WMA and WAV files. Data is transferred via a USB 2.0 connection which is located on the animal’s rear end (you can view that in our photo gallery). I would like to see future iterations of this device come with Bluetooth or wireless headphones, but then again that might do a number on your battery life. The Q-Cute MP3 player will retail for $40 when it hits the market.

Bang & Olufsen EarSet 3 Headphone with built-in Microphone
Bang & Olufsen EarSet 3 Headphone

[CES 2008] Bang & Olufsen unveiled its new high end headphone at CES. I had the opportunity to try it at the companys suite at the show.
The design is excellent, fitting any kind of ear size, staying firmly in place. Of course the sound quality is very good. The form factor is more discreet than its previous version Earset II, and thats also an improvement.

EarSet 3 will be available in all Bang & Olufsen showrooms by late February 2008 for $250.00.

Technical specifications in the full post.

Digital Mobile Microscope

Digital Mobile Microscope

[CES 2008] The Digital Mobile Microscope (FUN-300) that you see here from Vitiny is definitely interesting amidst the plethora of cloned iPods found in the International Gateway section of the CES. Since there is a ton of digital cameras around, why not digital microscopes? The FUN-300 comes with a 1.8″ 65k color TFT LCD display that is handy especially when used in split screen mode. You can capture an image of a certain part and then freeze it, comparing that to a live image elsewhere. Sounds like this will do great at biology labs everywhere. Powered by a trio of AAA batteries (or USB, depending on what floats your boat), the FUN-300 will probably hit the US market soon for $199 or thereabouts. There is a 2-megapixel version in the works, but that won’t be available until the middle of 2009.

    * 120mm x 56mm x 20.7mm
* 640 x 480 VGA camera
* Magnifier: 5x – 20x, 12x – 48x, 24x – 90x
* Image effects: Gray, Emboss, Inverse, Split Screen viewing
* Medical observation, Anti-counterfeit, Quality checking, Educational research

Optimus Maximus Keyboard Hands-On
Optimus Maximus Keyboard Hands-On

[CES 2008] We played with the (elusive) Optimus Maximus OLED keyboard from Art Lebedev and here are our first impressions: as we expected from the previous photos, the keyboard is quite bulky. The keys feel like one of the older mechanical keyboard (think IBM), which I personally like. Just as reported before, each key features a 10.1×10.1mm that displays clearly a letter/icon. They look great and the keyboard is very readable. Optimus Configurator, an image editor lets the user edit/add key icons/letters. In the back, you can find. To power the displays, there is an AC plug in the back. An anti-theft lock is also a nice detail. (See it in the photo gallery)

The keyboard runs on Windows/Mac and Linux and Art Lebedev is currently shipping pre-ordered keyboards. New orders will ship next month. 104 languages are currently supported (the image keys are stored in the SD card) and they keys are removable (that can come in handy if the tiny displays die).

Pennda Multi-functional Residential Gateway

Pennda Multi-functional Residential Gateway

[CES 2008] Now here’s an interesting device – the Pennda (a play on the word Panda, perhaps, since this product hails from China?) Multi-functional Residential Gateway. Don’t get scared by it’s name – this device is a wee bit larger than a Wii (no pun intended) and comes with a 7″ touchscreen display that does 800 x 480 resolution at 16.7 million colors. You can use it as a Skype phone (without the need for a PC), a photo frame or even as a central server for RSS feeds, e-mail and printing among others. Pennda is currently looking for distributors in the US, so there is no word on pricing or availability. Do you think such a device has a viable market?

    * Skype-functionality
* Integrated microphone
* Built-in WiFi modem
* RSS-based online advertising platform
* Photo frame functionality
i-Buddy puts more emo into IM

i-Buddy puts more emo into IM

[CES 2008] We are all familiar with emoticons on our instant messaging programs, and time has shown that emoticons have evolved to include animation. Here’s a possible next step up – a USB device that helps convey even more emotions via the i-Buddy. It resembles the MSN Messenger avatar, complete with a pair of wings. And if you’re wondering whether they flap or not, they do! The i-Buddy comes with a red LED on its left hand side of the torso to signify a heart, and its head glows in different color that corresponds to the emoticon received (e.g. red for angry). You must install a driver on the computer for the i-Buddy to work with it. Unfortunately, it isn’t compatible with other IM programs other than MSN Messenger as at press time. The i-Buddy was released in the UK last Christmas, and it will probably make an appearance in the US within a couple of months’ time with a retail price that lays smack between $19.99 and $24.99. Someone’s feeling blue above…

United Pepper supports Fair Trade

United Pepper supports Fair Trade

[CES 2008] We’ve all heard of sweatshops in the east that produce goods at a dirt cheap cost only to be sold to gullible folk at an extremely outrageous price. United Pepper from Europe aims to change that mindset, and the company has released a sustainable design webcam known as Lili. Designed in Belgium and manufactured in Vietnam, all harmful materials during manufacturing has been removed save for the essential parts only. It uses recycled packaging for a reduced CO2 impact with body components comprising sand, cotton and kapok. Lili captures the environment in 1.3 megapixel glory, while the built-in microphone works just fine for video calls. There is also the United Pepper Oscar USB Hub that comes with a quartet of USB 2.0 ports. In the pipeline is a 54-in-1 memory card reader which you can check out in the photo gallery. The Lili Webcam and Oscar USB Hub will retail for $39.90 and $24.90 respectively. If you want to do your bit for the environment, going green with United Pepper is one way of going about it.

Kodak Easyshare V1073 & V1273

Kodak Easyshare V1073 & V1273

[CES 2008] Kodak paraded a couple of its pre-production units of the latest Easyshare cameras – the V1073 and V1273. The images you see here and in the photo gallery are that of the former, which comes with 10 megapixels while the V1273 has 12 megapixels. I like the black rubbery finish that doesn’t leave any pesky fingerprints behind, and hopefully the final commercial version won’t see a change in color and material. The picture tagging function comes in handy, where you can insert tags such as “Favorite”, “Birthday”, “Holiday”, “Wedding” and others. I’m not sure whether the software has any limit on the number of tags though. More features and details on the Easyshare are available after the jump.

LG 4.8-inch UMPC – Wow!
LG 4.8-inch UMPC

This 4.8” Ultra-Mobile PC (UMPC) from LG is quite interesting. It looks a little like the OQO. It connects using HSDPA (or WiFi), runs Windows Vista and it is reasonably fast for productivity apps like email and web browsing. It is built on Intel’s Menlow platform for UMPCs. There are two USB ports, so connecting an external keyboard should be easy. Why an external keyboard? Because the integrated keyboard is not comfortable.

Other than that, it is a cool device and I hope that the pricing is right. LG has plans for Europe, Asia and Canada, but nothing for the U.S at this point. More specs in the full post

Dexpreso DEX2000 backup system
Dexpreso DEX2000 backup system

[CES 2008] While the Dexpreso DEX2000 might sound more powerful that the DEX1000, there are pros and cons to both sides. The DEX1000 can handle making backups of your data in different discs and formats without having you being there, but it needs to be connected to a PC to do that. The DEX2000 works as a standalone fully-automatic CD/DVD duplication system. It can only make copies of CDs and DVDs (are you thinking of running a bootleg operation from your basement now, matey? Arrrr!) but boasts the advantage releasing the completed disc into the collecting tub in just three seconds – making it a claimed five times faster than other automatic burning machines currently available. There is a removable hard drive housing located below the DEX2000, allowing you to change the content of stuff that you want to back up. It will probably retail between $700 and $800 when it hits the streets within a couple months’ time.

GloWriter for busy folks

GloWriter for busy folks

[CES 2008] I’m not too sure just exactly how busy one must be to purchase the GloWriter, but presumably there must be a market for it somewhere. This device can be mounted in your vehicle near your dashboard, allowing you to write down notes or ideas that pop into your mind on the spot. Unlike paper, the GloWriter’s writing surface can be illuminated at night in red or amber (depending on your preference). Each GloWriter comes with an on-board storage slot that keeps the eraser pen ready for use. You can use a couple of AAA batteries to power the GloWriter or connect it to your laptop or desktop via USB. For in-vehicle use, it is powered by the 12V to USB Power Adaptor. I guess this is yet another southpaw-unfriendly device, so folks like me will definitely rule out the GloWriter. The GloWriter is expected to be released within a couple of weeks’ time for $34.95.

Aura SoHo conference speakerphone

Aura SoHo conference speakerphone

[CES 2008] Conference phones are dime a dozen these days, but one of them pops up occassionally that makes you stop and take a second look. The Aura Soho is one of them, being a full duplex speakerphone that features the patented SoundClear Digital Signal Processing chip that claims to offer “unprecedented clarity” in your conversations. Regardless of whether you are running on an analog or digital phone system, the Aura SoHo caters to both. With CES 2008 being its launchpad, you can pick up the Aura SoHo for $229. I like the silver chrome surface that doesn’t leave obvious marks of pesky fingerprints on it. Check out the extra features below :-

    * Full duplex
* Digital Signal Processing (DSP)-based noise cancellation
* Active noise cancellation
* 3 internal omni-directional microphones
Casio Exilim Pro EX-F1 Hands-On, High Speed Burst Shooting
Casio Exilim Pro EX-F1 Hands-On

The Megapixel war is over as consumer understands that better optics are the real key to capturing better images. While the lenses do not grow larger, the computing and storage capacity of cameras do. Casio has found a way to use it: ultra fast photo and video capture. By ultra-fast, they mean 60fps for photos and 1200fps for videos – wow.

There is a photographic mode in which the camera starts to capture in 60fps burst mode, as soon as you touch the shutter button. When reviewing the photo, you can go back one second in time, to find a better shot.

In video recording more, you should be able to get stunning slow-motion movies, which were difficult to make without this feature. We can’t vouch for the image quality as we have not tested it in the field, but this is extremely interesting. Product home page

Last Day at Microsoft for Bill Gates (Video)

[CES 2008] Some people love him, others hate him but regardless of what one thinks of Bill Gates, he is (and has been) a part of the computing history. He is going to step down and “retire” (he will still attend board meetings) to work on reducing underdevelopment via his foundation. Personally, I like his “normal guy” personality, and although he can be a brutal businessperson, he is not a brutal businessperson with a primadona attitude. I have not donated to his foundation yet, but I feel like it would be more efficient in getting the job done than other established charitable entities. What’s your take on his legacy and his work with his foundation?

Dummy Camera aims to fool

Dummy Camera aims to fool

[CES 2008] This Dummy Camera aims to fool folks into thinking that your pad or office is well protected, but it actually resembles the real thing without any recording capability of sorts. The camera itself measures a realistic 4″ x 2.25″ x 2″ and comes with a mount to deter would-be thieves from breaking into your home whenever you’re away for a long vacation. The housing is made out of weatherproof anodized aluminum, so you won’t experience rust anytime soon that gives the game away. The blinking red LED light is powered by a couple of AA batteries in order to up the realism ante. Too bad you can’t remotely control it to pan and tilt at random to fool folks. Do you think having something like this at home will act as a deterrent?

Viliv UMPC U5
Viliv UMPC U5

[CES 2008] If you feel that the Viliv UMPC isn’t exactly your type of device to carry around for work, perhaps you will find the Viliv UMPC U5 more your cup of tea. It also comes with a QWERTY keyboard, although the display on this does not slide upwards like the Viliv UMPC. Instead, the QWERTY keyboard is split down the middle, separated by a widescreen WSVGA display. Sounds perfect for BlackBerry lovers who love thumb-typing. All the specifications are the same as the Viliv UMPC, save for the display size and weight. It is tipped to hit the streets sometime this Q3 for $700 or $800.

Samsung Prototype Ultra-Slim LCD TV is Amazing Looking
Samsung Prototype Ultra-Slim LCD TV is Amazing Looking

[CES 2008] Flat TVs were –again- the star of the shows at Samsung’s CES 2008 booth. Although Pioneer also has an impressively thin display (9mm thick), Samsung’s design is simply fantastic and seems closer to be a real product. The slim TV in the photo above weighs only 25lbs! Yes, 25. We have been shown more prototype of the same caliber and believe me the photos don’t do them justice. Of course, these are prototypes and Samsung has declined to tell us when a product will come out of this design, but I bet that by CES 2009, we will see a product like this.

Viliv UMPC is extremely portable

[CES 2008] Looks like Viliv is going to jump onto the UMPC bandwagon with the unimaginatively named Viliv UMPC. It runs on the latest Intel Menlow platform that supposedly gives greater power efficiency compared to older chips, but then again I wouldn’t expect the battery life and performance to take such a big jump since hardware manufacturers will take advantage of the added speed and efficiency by throwing in even more functions and features. It has a QWERTY keyboard that is hidden under the display (which slides upwards). It looks small enough (and powerful enough to boot) to carry around in conventions such as these without breaking your back (560 grams), which is always a good thing. The Viliv representative has slated the UMPC’s release for Q3 this year, targeting a MSRP that lands between the $700 and $800 mark. One thing’s for sure – I wouldn’t want to run Windows Vista on this as it will positively crawl.

PC cases look more like HiFi unit

PC cases look more like HiFi unit

[CES 2008] The Noblesse line of PC cases certainly look more like the center console of a mini HiFi system than a computer case thanks to its design. Some might call it tacky and overstated, while others will definitely love the ‘all-in-one’ category this PC case falls into. Which side are you on? Both cases come with an IR remote control that supports Windows Vista, XP and Media Center Edition, making the Noblesse K-1 ‘Muse’ and K-2 ‘Ebony’ an almost sure bet to be part of the living room entertainment setup. The remote control that comes with this looks rather tacky and cheap though, and it feels plasticky to the touch. Other than the external design, everything else on and inside the K1 and K2 are the same. Hit the list of specifications below.

    * Chassis: 200mm x 440mm x 510mm
* Full ATX form factor
Portable stereo sound on Orbitsound T3

Portable stereo sound on Orbitsound T3

[CES 2008] The old school way of getting portable stereo sound was through the use of headphones, but Orbitsound from UK has come up with something different – the T3 device. It is slightly larger than the average BlackBerry and is best experienced when worn around the neck. I tried it on and it really sounded as though I was wearing a pair of headphones, although you could say the sound isolation was extremely poor no thanks to the amount of noise and human traffic that’s going on in the busy Sands convention center. It works great with any iPod, MP3 players, CD players or notebooks as long as they support line-in jacks.

Should you want to indulge in a little private listening, there is always a 3.5mm headphone port on the T3 to suit your needs. Such portable stereo sound is made possible thanks to Orbitsound’s airSOUND single-point-stereo technology. I like the fact that the T3 charges through a USB port, making it all the more easy to keep it juiced up. It takes approximately 2 hours of charging time for a full tank, and the T3 can go on for approximately a dozen hours before it is exhausted. What you see here is a prototype unit, so the silver-colored sides will not be spray painted in the final release – instead it will feature a silvery chrome surface that absolutely adores fingerprints. It will be released this summer, retailing for $149 a pop.

Piggy iPod speaker with cool controls
Piggy iPod speaker with cool controls

[CES 2008] This porcine speaker works with your iPod and iPhone, and I must say it impressed me with the sound quality. While the design isn’t exactly cute per se, the fact that Amethyst included a glowing mouth adds to the appeal of this speaker dock. Its ears feature an airflow optimized design that helps avoid distortion and resonance, although you can’t really tell that on a noisy showroom floor. While it is already available in Europe (for $99 I might add), Amethyst is currently looking for distributors in North America. What’s most interesting about this iPod speaker dock are its ears – rubbing the right ear lowers the volume while doing so for the left ear will increase it. Pretty neat use of touch sensitive technology! I suppose since this is Vegas, there would probably be ‘adult’ versions of iPod speakers using similar technology although that would be another can of worms altogether

Asus Eee with WiMax – Hands-On
Asus Eee with WiMax, Larger Display

[CES 2008] Asus has announced that it will put its weight (alongside Intel and Sprint) behind WiMax and is committed to support WiMax by offering WiMax enabled computers at affordable price. For most Asus computers, “affordable” means “starting from $999), but Asus’ chairman declined to comment on the WiMax Eee pricing, only saying that it would be “very affordable”. Anyhow, I do not think that WiMax alone will increase the price of the Eee by $50 (a WiMax chip is not that big or expensive), but that is just my opinion. On their side, a Sprint representative said that WiMax subscriptions would surely be less expensive than a 3G one. This sounds good to us.

The Asus Eee PC that was used for the demo didn’t have a super fast connection (around 700Kbps), but it was a WiMax one. I don’t know how the connection was setup, but I don’t think that this is representative of what consumers might get WiMax rools out.

Take a look at the Eee WiMax photo gallery to see the Asus’ slides about the WiMax Eee, but also about their broad line of laptops. We were there so that you don’t have to be

Alltel Wireless AAA Mobile Navigation and Search Tool

Alltel Wireless AAA Mobile Navigation and Search Tool

[CES 2008] Alltel Wireless and AAA have joined forces to deliver AAA Mobile – a GPS application that allows Alltel customers (comprising of both AAA members and non-members) to find AAA Approved points of interest as well as other locations quickly. All you need is a GPS-enabled Alltel phone and you’re good to go. Some of these functions include :-

    * Locating AAA Approved points of interest (POIs), including Diamond Rated hotels and restaurants.
* Searching more than 100,000 locations that offer AAA member savings.
* Reviewing detailed AAA descriptions for POIs on their phones.
* Accessing a map showing a destination on the mobile phone screen.
* Adding locations as favorites for quick recall in the future.

The AAA Mobile application will set you back with a $9.99 monthly fee (that amounts to $2.99 per day), so if you’re having trouble navigating through the vast halls (gambling or otherwise) in Las Vegas like I do, the AAA Mobile is certainly a fine piece of software to own.

Versuz Scoreboard plays it loud

Versuz Scoreboard plays it loud

[CES 2008] Seventy Inc. wants to get kids out more often instead of letting them lounge around in the living room all day long playing video games. Hence, the Versuz Scoreboard that marries the functions of a portable electronic scoreboard and audio player in a single device. It comes with a compartment on top that can be opened to store an iPod or basically any other device that works with a line-in jack, allowing you to play back your favorite tunes to pump up the environment while you’re having a game of basketball. The scores can be adjusted by pressing buttons on the Versuz Scoreboard or simply by using the included remote control. I like the fact that the panels on the Versuz Scoreboard can be changed to that of your favorite team, but Seventy Inc. is currently in talks with various sporting teams with regard to licensing their team logos for use on the $199 Versuz Scoreboard, so that might take some time to happen. Hopefully this will make more kids sweat it out with the rest of the people in the ‘hood.

    * RF Remote Controller
* Indoor/Outdoor LED settings
* AC or battery (six D batteries) powered
* Approx. 4 to 6 hours battery life on full blast
* 2 x 10W speakers
* Countdown clock – Period/Inning/Quarter/Pound
* Versus Scoreboard Microphone
* Cool crowd and taunt sound effects

iShoes to the fore!

iShoes to the fore!

[CES 2008] Adding an ‘i’ prefix in front of your product name is old hat these days, but that hasn’t stopped Ilya Kaganovich and Boris Kaganovich from Plymouth, Minnesota to come up with the iShoes. This pair of motorized shoes helps to get you from one place to another (within a short distance, of course) in a fast and efficient manner. It has a rather limited range of just three miles, so this would be good to get you from your office to a subway station where you can easily slip it off and pack it into your bag. A pair weighs 5.3kg and has a top speed of 13.5mph. It takes roughly 2 hours for a full charge, but I think the $599.99 price tag is a wee bit high for a little extra convenience. Best to literally go the extra mile on bus no. 11 (your own two legs) as you will not only burn more calories but save some serious dough in the process.

LumiPrint illuminated photo frame

LumiPrint illuminated photo frame

[CES 2008] LumiPrint from Delkin is really neither here nor there, and is actually a different way of doing things. It stresses that it is not a digital photo frame, so you don’t have to worry about memory cards, LCD displays and even digital interfaces – sounds perfect for the older generation who want to literally brighten up their photos without going through the hassle of learning how to use a digital photo frame. Normal photos are illuminated thanks to modified light pipe technology that has been built right into the frame.

This light shines through a piece of acrylic, making the acrylic glow brightly which in turn provides illumination for your images. Each LumiPrint package comes with five sheets of LumiPrint photo paper that can be printed on your inkjet printer after adjusting the settings to matte photo paper. The LumiPrint comes with a dimmer switch so you can save power during the day when photos don’t need any illumination. Of course, you can use standard photo prints with the LumiPrint, although you will end up with the words “Kodak”, “Fujifilm” or anything else that is normally printed on the back of each photo.

Photos are best printed in 4″ x 6″ size. You can choose to power the LumiPrint using four AA batteries or AC power, and I would recommend the latter if you’re going to be at home all the time. There is no word on battery life at press time, although we do know the LumiPrint will ship this April for $40 a pop.

Lime D735 portable video recorder

Lime D735 portable video recorder

[CES 2008] Thanks to miniaturization, we get smaller and smaller devices these days, and the Lime (Life Is More Entertaining – what an acronym!) D735 portable video recorder is almost as small as a large cellphone. One thing that strikes me the most is the form factor and design that somewhat looks like the Nokia N93, no thanks to the multi-swiveling LCD display that gives the game away. This device will probably hit the US market within a couple of months or so with a targeted MSRP of $200, depending on whether a distributor can be found. Some of the specifications include :-

    * 5.2 megapixel CMOS sensor
* Records movie in VGA quality at 30fps
* Supports AVI, JPEG and WAV formats
* SD memory card slot
* Built-in motion sensor
National Geographic iGen NV20/20

National Geographic iGen NV20/20

[CES 2008] National Geographic came up with a night scope last year known as the iGen, and this time they have released an update, boasting night vision technology that snaps photos as well. Black and white images are stored on an SD memory card (no SDHC, but then again I doubt you will be capturing lots of images with this thing) so budding voyeurs who love to stalk lovers walking hand-in-hand in a park at night will probably love to get their hands on this $450 device. Of course, being a NatGeo product, this would be best suited for watching animals rather than humans mate after dusk More specifications are as follows :-

    * Ambient light amplification of 650 times
* Functions in both day and night
* Variable Frame Rate (from 2 fps to 30 fps)
* Infrared Intelligence (3 modes)
* Enhanced Infrared sensitivity
Viliv X5 DIC low on connectivity

Viliv X5 DIC low on connectivity

[CES 2008] The Viliv X5 DIC is the lowest end of the the X5 range, as it shares all the same hardware specifications with the X5 VANT and the X5 AIO, but loses out in terms of connectivity. There will be no internal GPS chipset, no WiFi or Bluetooth connectivity or even mobile TV. There is also no option to add an HSDPA/WiBRO/WiMAX module so you can forget about going online with the X5 DIC. As you can tell from the name, the X5 DIC comes with an 11-language dictionary, making this suitable for kids and college students alike who are keen to pick up a new language. I suppose it would come especially handy when you’re watching a movie and want to find out the meaning of an unknown word in the subtitles. It is estimated that the Viliv X5 DIC will hit the streets sometime this March for approximately $600.

Viliv X70 VANT missing the kitchen sink

Viliv X70 VANT missing the kitchen sink

[CES 2008] I must say, I am extremely impressed with the Viliv X70 after taking a good, close look at it. While it certainly isn’t the smallest GPS device with PMP capabilities around, you would definitely be pleased with the amount of features crammed in. Not only does the X70 make it a snap to help you get around, it also boasts a host of entertainment options, ranging from YouTube video support to Internet surfing and XviD/DivX/MPEG video playback to keep everyone in the car happy, especially during those long road trips. No longer will you have to hear cries of “Are we there yet?”. The Picture-in-Picture capability also works great to find your way without missing on the movie that your passengers are currently watching. The X70 Vant is tipped to be released sometime in March this year for approximately $600. Check out the list of features below :-

    * RMI Alchemy Au1250 700MHz processor
* 256MB DDR2 600MHz RAM
* 30GB/60GB hard drive
* 7″ WVGA 16 million color touchscreen display (800 x 480)
Visteon Headrest Entertainment System

Visteon Headrest Entertainment System

[CES 2008] Bringing kids on a long road trip can be annoying especially if they have grown up on a diet of video games instead of good ol’ books. The Visteon Headrest Entertainment System could help alleviate boredom, as it not only plays back DVDs but comes with a built-in Gameboy Advance inside complete with a cartridge slot. Each purchase comes with a couple of replacement leather-clad headrests, a pair of 2-channel wireless headphones, a pair of DVD player remote controls, and two wireless game controllers. The purchase price also includes the entire installation process. It can be quite pricey though, retailing for $1,700 when it is released on April 1, 2008. Remote controls, headphones and wireless controllers all work via IR so kids who love playing lying down might find some difficulty in controlling Mario. There is also a non-GBA version that retails for $200 cheaper and misses out on the game controllers.

    * 7″ TFT LCD color display
* Top-loading CD/DVD player
* Integrated Gameboy Advance
* Backlit controls
* Input/Output Jacks

You can check out the older top-down model if you want that comes with a larger screen size.

Blinger makes it a snap to spend money

Blinger makes it a snap to spend money

[CES 2008] Now here’s another method that makes it easier for you to spend money – the Blinger. This handheld wireless device offers a real-time, constant connection between you and your back account – all you need to do is slip your (BlingNation-enabled) credit card or ATM card behind the Blinger and you’re good to go. Not only does it connect to your bank account, it offers you the option to perform various transactions such as wiring money over to your friend as well as various account information that is readily available at the tip of your fingertips. Should you meet a friend who has another Blinger, you can always set an amount and send it to him/her by touching both your Blingers together. Blinger uses a PIN number authentication system as well as a proprietary encryption mechanism in order to keep you protected.

It will be made available to banks from this March onwards at approximately $100, whereby customers will then be charged accordingly by their respective banks. Be forewarned that there is a monthly subscription fee if you want to take advantage of the Blinger service. I’m not too sure if this idea will take off – most places these days already have a WiFi connection or you can easily log on to your online bank account to make a mobile transaction, while your credit card can be used should you require instant cash. Which niche do you think the Blinger will fit into?

QuadTri Pad prototype on display

QuadTri Pad prototype on display

[CES 2008] Check out the QuadTri Pad – a one-hand keyboard that could possibly improve data input capability where mobile devices are concerned. It requires all five fingers on your hand to perform some touch-typing, but I must say it will probably take a fair bit of time to get used to the letters as well as their positions. Basically, all your digits are supposed to cover the entire QWERTY keyboard which has already been ‘miniaturized’. I did give the QuadTri Pad a go, but had some difficulty with the spacebar which was located on the left hand side of the keyboard as I am a left hander. Guess us southpaws are maligned again, eh? The unit on display is just a prototype at the moment and is attached via USB, but depending on the market demand and preference, the released version could come with Bluetooth connectivity. A commercial version ought to roll out within the next six months, retailing for under $100.

NeoNode N2 Hands-On
NeoNode N2 Hands-On

Neonode pioneered the full touch screen phone long before Apple. Although it runs on Windows Mobile, it has a user interface that is unique to the brand. The touch screen uses a proprietary infrared technology called zForce designed to work better with fingers, compared to traditional pressure-sensitive touch displays. The NeoNode N2 is incredibly small: 47mmx77mm, 60 grams. It feels good in the hand.

The user interface is easy to use. There are only a few basic gestures to learn and I was able to do it in a few minutes on the show floor. NeoNode N2 is a phone for everyone, not a business phone. The company hopes to reach a “reasonable” (if I hear this word one more time, I will snap) price, once subsidized by a carrier. The company would not tell, but it is a GSM phone, so they have to be talking to Cingular and T-Mobile, with a preference for Cingular.

Finally, NeoNode has plans for a larger smart phone with a full QWERTY keyboard – I cannot wait to see it.

Dexpreso DEX1000 backup system

Dexpreso DEX1000 backup system

[CES 2008] Making a backup of your work or data is more than important despite many people (including me) throwing caution to the wind by thinking a hard drive failure will “never happen to me”. Why not reduce the risk with the Dexpreso DEX1000 backup system? This device is hooked up to your computer and can duplicate up to a hundred discs in a single process. You can even have a nmixture of data discs without having to change them during the backup process. I must say it looks more like some sort of espresso maker, although this machine spits out discs instead of a steaming hot cup of joe. While there are no distributors in the US just yet, the company hopes to make a deal within the next couple of months and plan to sell the DEX1000 within a price region of $600 to $700. Some of the functions include :-

    * Data backup/copier
* ISO creation and restore
* Disc eraser
* Music ripper (from audio CDs to MP3, WAV and WMV formats)
Neutrano Photowatch

Neutrano Photowatch

[CES 2008] Telling the time has gotten a little bit more fun with the Photowatch from Neutrano. Nothing mind blowing here, save for the following :-

    * 128 x 128 LCD display
* USB rechargeable
* 8-hours of viewing time
* Included software to zoom and crop photos
* Time/date, slideshow & auto off
* Works with Mac and PCs

There was no mention of the memory capacity by the rep other than the fact that it can hold a maximum of 100 photos at 128 x 128 resolution. I guess that would probably put it at 64MB tops. Hopefully it can double up as a USB flash drive as well. It will retail somewhere in the region of $50 when available in the US.

SONY Nav-U series: the elegant GPS with dual view
NV-U83T: elegant GPS with dual view

[CES 2008] Sony unveiled its new Nav-U line (models NV-U73T and NV-U83T) last Sunday during the CES press conference. We had the opportunity to take a closer look at it today and we liked it: the sleek and elegant design is backed up by interesting technical features like the dual view (see photo). Users can see a location in details, which is useful when you remember a place only by the surrounding point of interests.

When the GPS signal is weak the POSITION Plus feature provides a more accurate estimation of the positioning. It includes a pressure sensor, gyro sensor and an acceleration sensor (most competitors do not have these sensors to help the position estimation)

We did not take the Nav-U for a ride, so we do not know how it feels in the real world.

Available in early spring, pre-orders are now being accepted at www.sonystyle.com/navu

Pricing: NV-U73T $350 and NV-U83T $500
Panasonic 150-inch Plasma TV
Panasonic 150-inch Plasma TV

[CES 2008] CES would not be CES without ridiculously large displays.

This year, Panasonic has a 150” Plasma display that looks… stunning! Samsung and LG have seemingly dropped from the (size) arms race to focus on cost and size reductions for their 50” to 60” displays. Anyhow, even if 150” is a crazy size, it is still very impressive to look at – even for someone who has seen his share of pixels.

Samsung Stereo Plasma Display
Samsung Stereo Plasma Display

Samsung was presenting its 3D-ready (stereo capable) by showing a few games and movies. It works with shutter glasses that synchronize with the TV by infrared (IR). We see in stereo because our eyes see the world from a slightly different perspective. To reproduce this on a TV, a different image is created (by the game, or the movie) for each eye and the TV displays them one after the other. The glasses prevent the right eye from seeing the left image and so on. With a 120Hz TV, each eye can still see a 60Hz movie – not bad at all. To play stereo games, the TV needs to be connected to a computer and requires a special piece of software, for each game, sold for about $4. In the future, you can expect to see broader and less expensive support for stereo games.

[CES 2008] The Viliv X5 AIO (All-In-One) is similar in all respects to the X5 VANT, save for the fact that it misses out on the WiFi connectivity. I don’t know about you, but I definitely won’t mind forking out a little bit of cash to get the X5 VANT just for the WiFi connectivity as it would definitely be a waste to not take advantage of its 4.8″ WVGA display on a portable device.

National Geographic Star Gazer

National Geographic Star Gazer

[CES 2008] National Geographic keeps up with the times with the Star Gazer that was introduced at CES 2008. I know that star gazing is an activity that not many people indulge in, since it sounds rather boring and is too slow for the video-game generation. Hopefully something like the Star Gazer device will be able to pique the interest of folks in star gazing, and it is certainly worth packing for any camping trip thanks to the lightweight, durable and compact form factor. National Geographic claims that you will see five times more stars even in suburban skies with this thing, although I’d be more cautious with the actual performance. It currently retails for $199.95. Features of the National Geographic Star Gazer include :-

    * Image Intensifier Tube Technology
* 500x Ambient Light Amplification
* Magnification: 3.0x
* Field of view: 68 feet at a distance of 200 feet, 12-degree angle
* IR Field of Illumination
* CR-123 or 3-volt lithium battery
* 12.3 oz
* 6.06 x 2.35 x 3.80

Samsung Giorgio Armani in the flesh

Samsung Giorgio Armani in the flesh

[CES 2008] At long last, here we have the Samsung Giorgio Armani handset in the flesh. Just like the suits from Armani, the handset itself looks extremely understated yet elegant, coming in a glossy all-black color. It features the Samsung CROIX user interface, a full touchscreen display (that’s the way to go these days it seems), a 3 megapixel camera and a microSD memory card slot to store all your photos and music inside. It comes clad in an Armani leather case so you can be sure to look stylish each time you whip this puppy out to answer a call. No idea on pricing, but as we stated last year, it will be released globally this year to discerning business folk.

Viliv X5 VANT

Viliv X5 VANT

    * RMI Alchemy Au1250 700MHz processor
Fujitsu PalmSecure mouse: palm vein authentication system
Fujitsu PalmSecure mouse: palm vein authentication system

[CES 2008] We already published about the Fujitsu PalmSecure technology in July 2006. At that time, it was meant to be an enterprise technology for ATMs. Fujitsu told us that they are showing the mouse for the first time in the USA at CES.

The scanner integrated in the PalmSecure mouse captures the palms vein pattern image while radiating it with near infrared rays. The process allows this image to appear as a black pattern, which is then compared against a pre-registered pattern to authenticate the person.

A lot of biometrics security systems are based on the fingerprints, and I always imagined that it might lead to fingers being cut by thieves With this technology that cannot happen because the pattern is accurate only when the blood is circulating.

This is currently an enterprise solution targeted to a wide range of market including security, financial/banking, healthcare, but Fujitsu plan to have a consumer product in the near future. See more photos about the technology in the full post.

SanDisk Sansa View gets 32GB bump
SanDisk Sansa View gets 32GB bump

[CES 2008] SanDisk, being the number two PMP player in the US market at the moment has just unveiled the 32GB version of Sansa View, doubling the capacity of its previous high end 16GB model. All other specifications and features remain the same, with the only difference being the memory bump. If you think that forking out $199.99 for the 16GB model is not good enough for you, the Sansa View 32GB model will hit the streets for $349. Do you think this will eat into the iPod’s sales, or can they co-exist peacefully?

Mio To Announce The Mio Move, Maps Acquisition Plans

[CES 2008] Mio is coming up with new models called Mio Move. One is cute (and square) small GPS and the other has a more classic wide-screen form-factor. They both have a new design and most importantly, new software. The new user-interface is more finger-friendly, but we have not had enough time to dig deeper.

Mio users have been asking for maps, whether it is upgrade or foreign. Mio will partially fulfill their wishes: Foreign maps are on their way and we know that Western/Eastern Europe and Australia are on the list.

Dell Crystal Display

Dell Crystal Display

Dell has released a new 22″ widescreen known as the Dell Crystal Display. It is made from 4mm thin ultra-clear tempered glass, boasting a built-in webcam as well as a quartet of integrated speakers with visible wiring and an output for a subwoofer. The Dell Crystal Display comes with WSXGA+ resolution (1,680 x 1,050), a response time of 2ms, and a $1,200 price tag. I must say this is one display that just oozes with sexiness. If only the rest of Dell products will be able to take the same route instead of the usual black boxes they come in.
